We all look forward to the many parties and gatherings of the season, but we definitely don’t look forward to the residual post-holiday weight. With these five simple tips, you can still indulge in all the festivities without all the weight gain.

1. Opt for healthier alternatives

It’s not fair to feel like you have to load up on salad at holiday dinners while everyone else is devouring potatoes, rolls, and carbs alike. By swapping traditional unhealthy ingredients for healthier alternatives, you can still indulge in your favorite seasonal treats without putting on the weight. For example, instead of using heavy cream in soups, use coconut milk. Or, use cocoa nibs instead of chocolate chips. Simple, right?

“I know the traditionalists out there just cringed, but really, what’s more important, your health or yams with marshmallow? From introducing low-carb substitutes, to simply making less of certain dishes, there are plenty of menu-fixes which can help keep you trim.”

2. Put on your walking shoes

Don’t halt your sweat sessions during the holidays. While time may be limited between all of the holiday parties and events, opt for smaller, more manageable workouts like going for a quick 20-minute walk or practicing a simple yoga flow. Not staying consistent on your workouts will likely end you up on the “I’ll start working out again next year” list (which is never promising).

“Many people tend to gain weight over the holiday and winter season. Not only have their physical activity efforts decreased, but their calorie consumption has usually risen. Rather than curl up on the couch with a blanket and the television remote, there are many good health benefits to staying active all season long.”

3. Set time aside for self-care

It’s all merry and bright until you’ve exhausted yourself hosting family and friends and navigating crowded malls when gift-shopping, then it’s all just Bah Humbug! During the holiday season, it’s important to make time for yourself. Whether it’s taking a long bath or catching up on your favorite Netflix series, be sure to spend time doing something for yourself.

4. Practice mindfulness

Instead of mindlessly scarfing down your Christmas Eve dinner, take the time to listen to what your body wants and needs. Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Don’t overload your plate. Serve yourself moderate portions and go back for seconds if you’re still hungry.
  2. Pause. Before making yourself sick and going for yet another cinnamon roll, take a minute to breathe and check-in with your body. You might realize you’re actually full, or that something more nutritional would be most satisfying.
  3. Drink lots of water. Drinking water before and during meals will

Trust us: It’s easy to fall into the mindset of, “It’s alright if I eat whatever during the holidays,” but it’s much harder to come out of it.

5. Eat, drink and be merry!

It’s important to put health first, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take delight in all the fun seasonal activities. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you ate one too many rolls at your in-laws, or if you got seconds on dessert. Placing guilt on yourself for what you ate, or how much you worked out, is only going to create an unhealthy mindset towards fitness and health. Enjoy your holiday and continue to make healthy choices in the New Year!
